El Dorado County (Dec 23, 2024, 2024) – A federal grand jury has indicted 51-year-old Daniel Chartraw, formerly of South Lake Tahoe, on 12 counts of wire fraud related to a cryptocurrency investment scheme. The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert, was unsealed following Chartraw’s arrest.

Department of Justice

According to court documents, Chartraw allegedly defrauded multiple victims through his companies, Crypto-Pal LLC and TDA Global. He purportedly claimed these firms had developed a proprietary algorithm capable of generating exceptional returns on cryptocurrency investments. Instead of investing the funds as promised, Chartraw is accused of diverting the money to finance his personal lifestyle and travel expenses.

This is not Chartraw’s first encounter with federal charges. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection with a multimillion-dollar investment fraud scheme that resulted in investors losing nearly $3.6 million. In that case, Chartraw admitted to stealing $1 million by posing as an owner and manager of a company selling “dore” bars, which he falsely claimed contained precious metals.

FBI

The current investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Delaney prosecuting the case. If convicted, Chartraw faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, any sentence would be determined at the discretion of the court, considering applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. It’s important to note that these charges are allegations, and Chartraw is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case underscores the importance of vigilance when considering investment opportunities, particularly in emerging markets like cryptocurrency. Investors are advised to conduct thorough research and exercise caution to protect themselves from potential fraud.
