LAKE TAHOE — Leaders from California, Nevada and the Washoe Tribe will gather Wednesday, Aug. 19, for the 30th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit, an event expected to highlight three decades of environmental restoration while charting the future of one of the nation’s most treasured alpine lakes.
Hosted by U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., the annual summit will take place at Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. The event begins at 10 a.m. Pacific time, with programming following an 8:30 a.m. arrival.
For residents of El Dorado County, the summit carries particular importance. Decisions surrounding forest health, wildfire mitigation, transportation, water quality and recreation directly affect communities stretching from South Lake Tahoe to Pollock Pines and beyond. The Tahoe Basin spans both California and Nevada, making federal, state, tribal and local cooperation essential to protecting the lake and surrounding forests.
According to the event announcement, this year’s summit will provide an opportunity
“to reflect on the progress made to restore the Tahoe Basin over the last three decades, and to discuss current challenges that the surrounding communities face and ways to preserve and protect Lake Tahoe in the years to come.”

Organizers said keynote speakers and additional participants will be announced closer to the event.
The Lake Tahoe Summit has become the region’s premier annual forum for discussing environmental policy, watershed protection and collaborative restoration efforts. Since its inception in the 1990s, the gathering has brought together elected officials, tribal leaders, scientists and conservation organizations to address emerging threats facing the Tahoe Basin.
Those threats continue to evolve. Increased wildfire risk, climate change, invasive species, aging infrastructure and pressure from year-round recreation remain among the region’s most pressing concerns. Local governments and public agencies on both sides of the state line have increasingly emphasized forest thinning, fuels reduction projects and transportation improvements as part of broader efforts to protect Lake Tahoe’s famed clarity and surrounding communities.
For El Dorado County residents, the summit often provides insight into future federal funding priorities and regional partnerships that influence projects throughout the South Shore and the greater Tahoe Basin.
